Description

2004 remastered reissue of 1977 album features eight tracks & includes original artwork with updated sleeve notes. The second Pat Travers album ''Makin'' Magic'' is, to many, the best of the man''s early albums. It''s easy to see why people feel this way. It''s a harder rocking release than the debut album - witness the thunderous title track and the classic ''Rock n'' Roll Susie''. The album is also memorable for the appearance of one Nicko McBrain on drums alongside long time bassist ''Mars'' Cowling. The album''s highlight is, though, perhaps Pat''s heartfelt message to his own brother ''Stevie''. ''Makin'' Magic'' is where the Pat Travers story REALLY starts. Majestic Rock.

What a revelation "Making Magic" was after Pat''s first sincere, but pedestrian & hurried (Ten days) effort "Pat Travers". No one could have expected the wonderful music that was to come from this visionary Canadian guitarist. "Making Magic" just jumped off the vinyl through the speakers into my head like some sort of sonic train that I could ride on the rest of my life! The album starts off with the funky intense namesake song filled with snaking snarling leads & intricate time changes that were to become a Pat Travers signature. Next came "Rock''N''Roll Susie" & "You Don''t Love Me," showing PT''s roots in the blues, but faster & more high energy than most artist have ever dreamed of at that time or since. "Stevie" is a moving song dedicated to PT''s little brother that shows what a sense of beautiful melody PT has & how he could sonicly build a song structure to epic purportion. "Statesoro Blues," retools the old blues tune in everyway made famous by The Allman Brothers. "Need Love" & Hooked on Music" are the real crown jewls of this album for me. Killer, killer, fast funky rock that would inspire later bands like Extreme. "Need Love" starts with funk that is just pure groove & seamlessly runs into the fast & furious metal tinged funk of "Hooked on Music"! The all instrumental ending tune "What You Mean to Me" is another prime example of Pat''s melodic sense, & serves as a taste of even better songs to come on the next album, "Putting it Straight."
5/5
A little addendum to my review:
Other reviewers have complained about the sound quality of this CD. There is static noise on this disc & I agree that it would be better without the noise, but....There is no alternative version out & the sound quality is really not hampered that much (you can still hear everything fine) unless you are totally preoccupied with the static, this CD still beats having an old snarfed up vinyl copy anyday. So if you love this album don''t let the noise hold you back, it''s still a masterpiece! :)

Until recently, the only two PT albums I had were Black Pearl and Live: Go For What You Know. I have been ordering some of his back catalog including this one. I love this one and there''s a lot of great music here. The only "catch" is that it is somewhat "dated". If 70''s blues-rock is a style that appeals to you, I definitely recommend this one.

This a great album. I love anything Pat does. He is so under rated it''s a shame. I would stack Pat Travers against any Guitarist. I have every album from Pat. Yes, I am old and still young enough to ROCK-N-ROLL! Enough said! Long live ROCK-N-ROLL!

I''m with everone else on this one ...... The quality of the cd recording is absolutely shocking !!! ... It sounded that bad that I thought I had a problem with my CD player in my van when I first played it ...the crackling in the background of each track is enough to make a true P.T fan cry. I bought this because a few months ago I dug out the old vinyl copy and with the aid of a usb turntable made myself a cd for the van but due to the fact that most of my vinyl stuff was being passed about from friend to friend during my younger years it sounded like somone was frying bacon in the background ... so I thought to myself "I''ll treat my ears to the cd" .... Ooooooh Noooooo big mistake !!!! It would seem this record company did the same thing, only I had to pay 8 quid for it Grrrrr I''m not happy ... Come on Polydor dig the original tapes out and get it released with the sound quality it deserves. Don''t buy it you''ll be damn suicidal .... The one star I have awarded for this cd is for sound quality only and not content as this album is brilliant. I am now going to read the Amazon reviews for Pat Traver - Pat Travers as I ordered that CD at the same time as this one and fear the worst ..... Quinny

A great 2nd album from Pat Travers. Should have made him a big star in the UK, but he arrived at the wrong time, just as punk was emerging , and getting big. Had he being a couple of years earlier, he could have reached the same status as other great blues rock guitarists like Gallagher, Trower etc. This album is considered his best by most Travers fans. Well worth a listen.
